Importance of Training for teachers working with children in the age group 3-6

Traditionally nursery class teachers needed no other qualifications but to love children. Their task was to lovingly keep on the children for three hours, sing to them, recite rhymes, and play games. This extended to primary class teachers as well, who had to also have the skill of teaching children basic literacy and numeracy.

Even now those practice holds although more and more schools are looking for professionally qualified teachers to work with the younger age group as they are trained to help the children in their learning process with understanding and empathy. They also acquire the skills required to offer age appropriate education.

One may ask the question, “What is the big deal in teaching very young children?”

The times we live in have brought about many social changes. One of them is the apparent hurry to reach goals or climb to top of any ladder, or be ahead in the rat race. This has permeated through all levels of society, irrespective of class, creed and age. In deeply affects the very young as parents feel the same anxiety to push their children to learn, this, that or the other ahead of time, ahead of others so that they stand out in a crowd.

On the very first day of attending a play school, pre-School or nursery, the parents wait eagerly to ask the child, “what did you learn today?” . I am sure they will puff with pride if he would only sing,
”Johnny, Johnny, yes papa. Telling lies, no papa …….” But do they realise that what he has actually learnt today is the definition of a “lie”!! Perhaps he has learnt that he has to push some one aside, if he wants to be the first one up the slide or perhaps he learnt that it was good to share the swing with his new friend. He cannot articulate these learnings and the adults cannot see it as earning too. In order to be able to observe children and learn about them, the teacher needs specialised training. Only then will she be able to help the child at the right time and in the right manner.

Montessori is a much misused name and implies a school for very young children. It is considered synonymous with nursery or kindergarten and often wrongly used in place of what are popularly known as play-schools.

Montessori is the name of a person, a well known educationist, Dr. Maria Montessori. She offered a well structured method, with a comprehensive curriculum that can be taken into the classroom. She arrived at this method after observing children of the age group 3-6 years.

The conclusions that Dr. Montessori arrived at are based both on scientific process as well as her intuitions, much of thee have been proven right by the research done in the second half of the twentieth century.

She defined education as assistance to life and her philosophy is applicable to all age groups from birth to eighteen years. Her message is to follow the child, thereby ensuring that it is child centred education.

Any training that one undertakes has to be self propelled and the focus has to be on brining about changes in oneself to deal with new situations.

People wanting to work with children need to prepare themselves technically, intellectually and spiritually.
